2012-08-18

2012 International Debris Flow Workshop, the second of the workshop series, was successfully co-held by the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS(IMHE) and Key Laboratory of Mountain Hazards and Earth Surface Process, CAS in Chengdu during Aug 11th and 16th. More than 100 scholars from about 20 academic institutions in 6 countries attended this workshop. 5 keynotes and 30 reports were presented, and a post-workshop for 4 days were organized to investigate the debris flow control systems.

On behalf of WASWAC, WASER and IMHE, Dr. Chinapatana Sukvibool from Thailand Land Development Department, Mr. Ning Duihu and Prof. Deng Wei from the Ministy of Water Resources and IMHE in China, respectively, gave the welcome speeches. Subsequently, Prof. Lee Chack-fan from the University of Hong Kong, Prof. Takahisa Mizuyama from Kyoto University and Prof. Wang Zhaoyin from Tsinghua University gave keynotes about debris flow control measures. Prof. Liu Ko-fei from Taiwan University and Prof. Cui Peng from IMHE gave keynotes about debris flow numerical simulation and formation mechanism.

During the workshop, 30 reports in all fields about debris flow including case study, mitigation system, fluidity movement, formation mechanism, and risk evaluation were given by scientists from China, Japan, Thailand, Korea, USA and Italy, respectively. Research experiences and results were shared and exchanged during the workshop and new friendships were built.

A special report about the Introduction of Asian Network on Debris Flow was presented by Prof. Lee Chack-fan  during the workshop. The Asian Network on Debris Flow was proposed during the 2010 International Debris Flow Workshop and applauded by all the participants. After two years` preparation, the network has been greatly developed and was formally set up during this workshop.

During the closing speech, Prof.Wei Fangqiang,  the vice director of IMHE, commended the preparing work of both the workshop and ANDF. Meanwhile, the framework of international corporation in the debris flow field was expected.
