Prof. Nigel Wright delivered an academic report on modeling outburst flows which began with the flood taken place in Britain in 2010. He weighed the importance of numerical modeling for floods and debris flows against the traditional numerical computation method of Godunov that has limitations in its application.
The report aroused a heated discussion on debris flow modeling as well as place selection for numerical modeling. Dr. CUI Peng from IMHE introduced the IMHE’s research in mountain floods and debris flows, and the achievements made for national 973 programs. He voiced hope that the two sides should take the occasion to further their cooperation in the future.
Prof. Nigel Wright has over 25 years experience in modeling fluid flow in the built and natural environment. Particular applications are inundation prediction, vulnerability assessment, and river flows and low-head hydropower.
