The 6th International Conference of Debris-Flow Hazard Mitigation (DFHM6): Mechanics, Prediction, and Assessment will be held in Tsukuba City in Japan during June 22-25, 2015.
About the Conference
Background
Japan, a country where 70% of the land area is taken up by steep mountains, is constantly under threat from debris flows and related sediment disasters. Japan shares this problem with other mountainous regions of the world, creating a situation in which scientists, engineers and policy makers from various countries can share research in the field of the debris flows. Recent huge debris flows and frequent small-sized, but critical, debris flows causing severe damage to residential infrastructure and the environment indicate the importance of further research and surveys to understand causes, mechanics and required mitigations in relation to such flows. The impact of debris flows can be reduced when adequate knowledge and appropriate counter-measures are available. We need to press forward in our research with regard to developing effective mitigation strategies and maintaining disaster prevention programs. DFHM aims to promote international cooperation, communication and exchange of knowledge among researchers and practitioners. The first DFHM Conference was held in San Francisco, USA (1997) and subsequent Conferences were held in Taipei, Taiwan (2000), Davos, Switzerland (2003), Chengdu, China (2007), and Padua, Italy (2011).
Objectives
DFHM6 in Japan will provide a forum for world-wide debris-flow researchers, engineers and administrators to promote:
1. Deeper understanding of the mechanics of erosion, slope stability, sediment transport and deposition processes, and debris flows, including in situ and simulated laboratory debris flows;
2. Communication between researchers and engineers by introducing state-of-the-art technology and methods; and
3. Review and discussion of comprehensive activities and outcomes with a view to mitigating debris flow disasters and forming a more global perspective.
