Digital Mountain and Remote Sensing Applications Center TEXT SIZE: A A A

Introduction

Digital Mountain and Remote Sensing Applications Center is established based on the development need of Knowledge Innovation Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and major scientific and strategic needs of Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment. It is a comprehensive spatial information science unit based on the integration of resources within Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment.

Digital Mountain and Remote Sensing Applications Center, formerly the cartography division of Southwest geography institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences founded in 1966. The cartography division has been engaged in research and development of spatial information science and technology for over 40 years and it provides the most complete facilities and most technologically strong GIS, RS and spatial information technology integration and application services in scientific research institutions of southwestern China.

Development Goals

Center Vision: To build and improve the mountain discipline system and a digital platform for mountain scientific research and serve the national sustainable development of mountain science.

Strategic Objective: To build a data storage, processing, analysis and sharing platform of mountain basic spatial information of China, develop the comprehensive and integrated research methods of mountain environment, mountain hazards, mountain development based on geo-spatial information science and technology and gradually form three key research directions and core technologies such as  mountains, mountain resources and environmental remote sensing, digital disaster mitigation techniques supporting mountains scientific development and serving implementation of the national mountain development strategy to promote the mountain harmony, progress and prosperity.

Research

Digital Mountain and Remote Sensing Applications Center taking the geographic information systems, resources, environment and disasters remote sensing, digital hazard mitigation technology and spatial information technology integration and application services research as a core the main directions are:

1 Mountain Spatial Information Integration and Sharing

2 Mountain Environment, Dynamic System Modeling and Application

3 the Digital Platform of Mountain Science and its Integrated Application

4 Mountain Eco-environment Remote SensingTheory and Technology

5 Mountain Hazards Remote Sensing Identification and Monitoring Techniques

6 UAV Aerial Remote Sensing Technology and Application

7 Research and Development of Digital Disaster Mitigation Techniques and Demonstration

8 Mountain Spatial Information Visualization and Virtual Simulation

Equipment for scientific research

Digital Mountain and Remote Sensing Applications Center now has 400 information processing room, an exhibition hall and the internal data storage room, with 3 sets of database servers, graphic workstations, wide-format color plotters, scanners, a number of units, low altitude unmanned remote sensing aircraft, ERDAS Image, ArcGIS, SuperMap, Oracle and other specialized software, and plans to purchase spectrum scanner, differential GPS and other large equipment. And has built two interior space information platforms such as Sharing Network of Earth System Science Center and Southwest Upper Yangtze River and the Tibetan Plateau. .

Talents

Center currently employs 13 people, including two professors, five associateprofessors, an assistant researcher, five engineers,6 PhD candidates as well as 8 master candidates.Center is headed by Chinese-American Professor Chen Jinxiong and hires Sun Jiu-lin Academian, Liu Shu-zhen researcher as central scientific advisors.

Scientific research

The Center has taken a large number of national, provincial and ministerial levels of major research projects, including 13 national, provincial and ministerial awards, fill the 7 gaps in China, access to domestic and foreign counterparts of the same recognition and praise.The main research results obtained are:

11 in 1966, the publishing of Map of Sichuan Province with scale of 1:1000000 compiled by the former cartography research division filled the gap of map using in Sichuan Province

2 During 1978 ~ 1981, the former cartography research division participated in the Tengchong joint test of remote sensing and participated in the preparation of "Atlas of Tengchong airborne remote sensing," won the 1985 National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize;

3 During 1987 to 1990, the center undertook the study of "Three Gorges reservoir area of land carrying capacity " - "the influence of natural slope, elevation and land use on the land capacity in Three Gorges reservoir area ", and used SPOT images covering the whole area of land use survey, the total project has won the Chinese Academy of Sciences scientific and technological progress and national scientific and technological progress third prize;

4 In 1992, "Atlas of Ecology and Environment in the Three Gorges of Yangtze River" and the English edition, " Atlas of regional Resources and Economic Development of Three Gorges ", "Yangtze River Three Gorges SPOT satellite image map" and a series of Atlas are published by the Science Press and "Atlas of Ecology and Environment in the Three Gorges of Yangtze River" has been given as a gift to President Bill Clinton when President Jiang Zemin visited the United States;

5 From 1991 to 1995 "Southwest macro environmental remote sensing survey of land resources " is a sub-project of "85" major application project "Land Resources and Environment Remote Sensing Macro Investigation and Dynamic Research" and was awarded the Principal Scientific and Technological Progress Award;

6 In 2001, “Atlas of Sustainable Development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt" won the "Outstanding map" Award at the 20th session of the International Cartographic Conference (ICA);

7 In 2001, "remote monitoring of soil erosion in Sichuan Province," was awarded third prize in Sichuan Province scientific and technological progress;

8 In 2001 the commitment of "Remote sensing of food early warning detection system" in the "Southwest comprehensive survey of agricultural conditions" is a sub-topic in the national 863 projects on the Southwest region's agricultural development which played a role in food estimation;

9 In 2006 , the center joins  scientific data sharing network, design and build the sub-centers of Southwest Mountain of Earth System Science Data Sharing Network, which made an important contribution to the mountain scientific data sharing network;

10 From 2003 to 2008, the center has participated in the pre-major basic research projects of National Ministry of Science - "a fragile ecological environment of the Tibetan plateau and ecological study of an early warning system" to obtain a number of innovative achievements, access to the Tibet Autonomous Region first-class scientific and technological progress in 2008Award, "Tibet of ecological security barrier protection and construction plan" has been examined and approved by the State Council executive meeting;

11 In 2008, the Center was involved throughout the Wenchuan earthquake relief operations and made an important contribution to the implementation of two projects such as " remote sensing monitoring and assessment of Wenchuan earthquake " and " evaluation of resources and environment carrying capacity after Wenchuan earthquake "

12 In 2008, the Center was involved in major projects of the Ministry of Finance Project, "a comprehensive survey of regional resources" the results of which has passed the test of the State Council's relevant ministries and the development of the "Regional Resources and Environment Information System" has been highly praised by the leadership of relevant ministries.
