Spatial Early-Warning System on Probability of Rain-Caused Geological Hazards Operates Well TEXT SIZE: A A A

A Spatial Early-Warning System on Probability of Rain-Caused Geological Hazards was developed by Prof. Qiao Jianping from the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences to contribute to spatial and temporal prediction on geological disasters including landsides and debris flows triggered by rainfall in Southwest China.

The system was devised after years of spot investigation and research by the research group headed by Prof. Qiao Jianping, which could overcome the shortcomings of conventional early-warning systems for geological hazards including low precision.

The system has been officially put into operation in earthquake-afflicted areas of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province during the rainy season of 2010. Now the system has achieved a good result and expanded its application in other cities and counties, providing valuable data for local government in disaster reduction and early warning of geological hazards.
