973 Project on “Mechanisms and Risk Analysis of Extremely Large Scale of Flash Flood and Debris Flow in Western China” successfully accomplished TEXT SIZE: A A A

This project was started in 2011, and led by IMHE researcher Cui Peng. This project got professional guidance from several experts such as CAS Academician Sun Honglie since its inception , which provided guarantee for the implementation  of the objectives.

The main achievements of this project are as follows: (1) Revealed the physical mechanism of flash flood  and disaster forming process, developed high-effective simulation technology for flash flood  and disaster forming process, and designed flash flood  and disaster warning system under support of the network of smartphones. (2) Constructed stochastic process model of debris flow initiation, reveal the cascade failure of debris flow enlarging model, established integrated identification model of blocked river by debris flow, and put forward building destruction patterns and classification by debris flow; (3) Reveal catastrophic  features of large scale of flash floods and put forward new prevention technology ; (4) Established critical rainfall-triggered debris flow warning and forecasting model in Wenchuan Earthquake –stricken area, and explore disaster prevention theory of debris flow based on process control.

The outputs of the project have been effectively applied in the debris flow prevention and mitigation of Wenchuan Earthquake-stricken area and downstream of the Jinshajiang River.
