Recently, Dr. DENG Wei, director of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS (IMDE), Dr. LI Ainong, chair of the Digital Mountain and Remote Sensing Applications Center, visited the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences of the University of Maryland(BSOS), and carried on the academic change in the field of research on mountain remote sensing and GIS application, remote sensing monitoring on key process of response of land surface to global change, and key technology of mountain quantitative remote sensing, as well as talent cultivation and postgraduate education and so on.

During the meeting, Dr. John R.G. Townshend, dean of BSOS, introduced the basic situation of BSOS, postgraduate education, scientific research improvement and international cooperation in detail firstly. IMDE director DENG Wei then introduced on aspects of organization structuring of IMDE, research fields, field investigation stations, research teams, postgraduate education and scientific research achievement and international cooperation and so on, and put forward four suggestions for research cooperation in the future. Dr. John R.G. Townshend agreed with these suggestions and also hoped to enhance the mutual understanding and further to establish the cooperation partner relation. He addressed that he would actively promote the school authorities to agree to bilateral cooperation intention including signing a cooperation agreement and so on.

Dr. LI Ainong, thereafter, introduced the introduced the academic fields of mutual interest and research development of the Digital Mountain and Remote Sensing Applications Center of IMDE.

Organized by Prof. LIANG Shunlin and HUANG Chengquan, from Department of Geography of BSOS, DENG Wei had a talk with more than twenty postgraduates and young faculties from the Department. Each participant briefly introduced their education background, current research work, and even future plan. After an introduction of research situation of IMDE, DENG Wei described the scientific meaning and importance of mountain research, and expressed heartfelt welcome to all PhD graduates to work in IMDE, and introduced the relevant plans and measures of nation, CAS and IMDE for talent cultivation. All attendants had a lively discussion with DENG and LI, and show strongly interested in beautiful and mysterious mountains and plateaus.

Accompanied with Dr. LI Mengxue, director of international programm of BSOS, the delegation visited the remote sensing and GIS laboratory of geography department, and had an in-depth understanding on the research fields, experimental equipments and work environment of researchers and postgraduates.

During the visit in the University of Maryland, DENG Wei discussed with Prof. LIANG Shunlin, Prof. HUANG Chengquan and Prof. LI Mengxue in the field of future academic exchange in mountain remote sensing, project cooperation and short-term exchanges of young scholars and so on, consequently, some consensus had been reached, and both sides expressed their willing to actively promote the scientific cooperation between IMDE and BSOS.

During the visit in the University of Miami, recommended by Dr. Daniel Suman, the delegation meet with Prof. Helena, Prof. LIN Guoqing, Prof. Maria and Prof. Shimon respectively, to seek the potential cooperation objects and opportunities.

This trip had opened a new situation for IMDE to promote the international cooperation with American universities in mountain remote sensing.
