The Symposium on How to Raise Journals’ International Profile along with the ScholarOne Manuscript Training for Chinese users were held in Chengdu from 25 to 27 June, 2014. This symposium was co-sponsored by the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment (IMHE), CAS and the Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property and Technology Group. The theme of the symposium is focused on “how to raise academic journal’s international profile”, which have attracted members from over 100 Editorial Office of Academic Journals throughout China. Professor CUI Peng, the vice director of IMHE, and the editor in chief of the Journal of Mountain Science (JMS), made a speech. Professor QIU Dunlian, the executive editor in Chief was invited to give a presentation on the practices and management of the JMS.

At the beginning of this meeting, Professor CUI Peng addressed the meeting. He emphasized the important role of academic journals in disseminating the scientific and technical research knowledge and boosting the international collaboration of academic studies. He also spoke highly of the performance of Thomson Reuters in its effort in promoting Chinese academic journals internationally. He made a brief introduction on the IMHE and the Journal of Mountain Science to the audience.

In the first session, Mr. Jasper SIMONS, the vice president of the Publishing & Association Branch of Thomson Reuters made a speech regarding the best practices to improve the impact of the academic journals. He attached importance to five aspects – to build a solid infrastructure, to set rigorous editorial policies, to reach out to key opinion leaders, to find a partner who helps the journal to grow. He also introduced some new features of the ScholarOne manuscript submission system interface to the audience.

As the executive editor in chief of the JMS, Professor QIU Dunlian talked about the developmental history and trends of the Journal of Mountain Science, and the management and concrete practices in recent years. Especially, based on bibliometric analysis, she compared the impact of JMS with other international academic journals focusing on mountain research and analyzed the strength and weaknesses of JMS in building its global influence. JMS has started to use ScholarOne Manuscript system since 2011. Professor QIU made a brief introduction to the audience some nice features of this system.

In the second session, three speakers from different academic journals gave presentations about their practices and experiences in managing journals and improving the global impact of Chinese journals. Dr. ZHU Jianjun from the Higher Education Press spoke about the development of series of “Frontiers” academic journals. He highlighted the importance of scientificity, readability and standardization in managing academic journals. As the managing editor of the Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering and Frontiers of Earth Science, he spoke highly of using “Hot Topic” in every issue to display the most updated research progress. This idea inspired many audiences. Dr. PENG Chaoqun from the editorial office of Transactions of Nonferrous Metals Society of China emphasized the specialty of academic journals and importance of reporting basic research studies, applied research studies. Mr. WANG Xiaofeng, the director of Chinese Laser Press talked about the definition of journal’s global influence, the conditions and ways t raise the global influence. Generally speaking, all the speakers agreed that to collaborate with international academic press is an effective way in raising the global influence of Chinese journals.

In the last session, Mr. DU Yaowen, the technical engineer of Thomson Reuters directed the audience to use ScholarOne submission system to process manuscript. This kind of real practice helped the editors to use the system more efficiently and effectively.

Thomson Reuters chose to hold the 2014 ScholarOne Annual Meeting in IMHE because Journal of Mountain Science is one of the earliest journals using ScholarOne Manuscript system and has been developed greatly in the past several years in both quality and international influence.
