The 2024 International Mountain Forum (IMF) took place in Chengdu from November 11th to 15th. The event was inaugurated by prominent figures including Xie Anjun, Deputy Director of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Natural Resources, Zhao Xin, Deputy Director of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Yue Lei, Chief Engineer of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Emergency Management, Sun Hui, Director of the International Organizations Division of the Bureau of International Cooperation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Wen Anbang, Director of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment (IMHE) at CAS, and Luo Xiaomei, Deputy Director of IMHE at CAS. The forum was co-chaired by Su Lijun, Deputy Director of IMHE at CAS, Secretary-General of the Chinese Committee on the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (CNICIMOD), and Director of the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences(CPJRC), Zhao Jidong, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Mountain Hazards and Engineering Safety at CAS, and Ouyang Chaojun, Deputy Director of the laboratory.
In his opening remarks, Wen Anbang welcomed attendees and highlighted the IMHE's contributions to mountain science research. He encouraged collaboration to address global mountain challenges and support sustainable mountain development.
Xie Anjun discussed Sichuan's international cooperation in ecological protection and disaster mitigation, hoping to enhance global collaboration for sustainable development.
Zhao Xin outlined Sichuan's plans for technological innovation and international cooperation, aiming to address mountain sustainability challenges.
Sun Hui emphasized CAS's commitment to mountain ecosystem protection and sustainable development, seeking to strengthen international partnerships.
The forum featured special reports from 11 experts, including Academician Cui Peng, Foreign Academician Mohammad Qasim Jan, Deputy Director General of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) Izabella Koziell, Vice President Ng Charles Wang Wai of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) and among others.
With themes like mountain disaster management and digital mountains, the forum hosted 10 parallel sessions and 87 academic reports, guiding ecological civilization and mountain area development.
Additionally, two graduate forums were held, with 61 academic reports presented by experts and postgraduate students.
The 2024 IMF was founded by the Bureau of International Cooperation,CAS and organized by IMHE, CNICIMOD, CPJRC, and the Key Laboratory of Mountain Disaster and Engineering Safety at CAS, attracting over 200 experts and scholars from around the world.
