The inauguration of Sino-Nepal Joint Research Center for Geography was held in Tribhuvan University (TU) on April 28, 2014. 

Dr. DENG Wei, director of Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMHE, CAS), and Prof. Gunanidhi Neupane, vice chancellor of TU attended the ceremony representing both sides.

Dr.DENG Wei felicitated the founding of the Geography Center, and considered it as an important platform for promoting the quality of education of Nepal and the cultivation of talents. This inauguration also marks a new beginning of scientific and technological cooperation between China and Nepal. DENG emphasized that Chinese government and CAS has been attaching greater importance to the cooperation with Nepal. He also expressed wishes that both side should make joint efforts to promote capacity building of the center, striving for support from multiple channels, and ensure the continuous and fruitful collaboration, and finally make contributions to the promotion of teaching and research ability of TU. 

Prof. Gunanidhi Neupane expressed his heartfelt gratitude to IMHE for its efforts to this cooperation, and especially the donation of instruments and equipments and construction of laboratory. He said the laboratory will provide a platform for the teaching and experiments, and the founding of the Geography Center will greatly facilitate theteaching and research level of geography and many other subjects in TU and make contribution for the training of high-level personnel.On behalf of Nepalese government, Mr. Bishow Prakash Pandit, secretary of Ministry of Education of Nepa, appreciated the support from Chinese government and IMHE. 

All participants visited the laboratory after the ceremony and expressed admiration for China’s supports. 

The Geography Center was supported by Ministry of Science and Technology of China and joint built by IMHE and TU. Based on global climate change, the GeographyCenter takes the south and north slope of the Himalayas as research areas, emphatically carry out the geography research of mountain hazards, mountain ecology and environment monitoring and mountain development. The aim is to train more talents specializing in mountain geography, and promote research ability of related fields in Nepal, and finally make contribution for promoting China’s scientific and technological influence power and science and technology exchange and cooperation between China and Nepal.
