Recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the results of its 2022 “Research Fund for International Young Scientists”. Kahlil Fredrick Ermac Cui, an assistant foreign researcher at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chengdu, China(IMHE) obtained the grant for the project " Particle size segregation and diffusion in two-phase flows in different types of fluids "(grant no. : 12250410257) . This is the first time that IMHE has received a national natural science foundation of this type of project.
Kahlil Fredrick Ermac Cui, a Filipino, obtained his PhD from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) on July 2021 under the supervision of Prof. Gordon G. D. ZHOU at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment. In his research, he investigated the physical mechanisms that control the particle sorting in debris flows using coupled continuum-discrete numerical simulations. He has proposed equations that model size sorting in debris flows as well as its effects on the debris flow rheology. He has published more than 10 papers in the TOP journals including Journal of Geophysical Research, Engineering Geology, Geomorphology, Physics of Fluids, Physical Review Fluids and others.
The NSFC Foreign Scholars Research Fund project aims to support outstanding foreign researchers who come to China to carry out research work voluntarily, and to choose topics independently within the scope of NSFC funding, to carry out basic research in mainland China and promote long-term and stable academic cooperation and exchanges between foreign and Chinese scholars.
